Just like
a seed, plant an idea and it can grow and grow . . .
A good, unique idea is the basis for a successful business. Selling
snacks through a home party plan was not just a great idea, it generated
a new marketing concept in snack food. We would like to introduce
the genius behind this idea, Marlene Muzyka of Goodeve, Saskatchewan.
Marlene is Colleen Schneider's sister, and in 1990 Marlene thought
of the idea of selling popcorn products at home parties. She suggested
this to Darrell and Colleen who already owned a retail popcorn store
and from this idea a successful company has grown.
"It was a Saturday evening ritual to go and close up the store.
I remember thinking 'nice store', but this would be the last place
I would shop, especially with three small children ages 6, 4 and
one - there would be popcorn all over the mall and the car! I suggested
my idea of home parties to Darrell. He gave me all the product and
my kitchen became Popcorn Parties' first warehouse. My first party
was held in Goodeve. My friend who hosted the party was really excited
and loved the fact that she only had to provide drinks for the guests.
The ladies at the party responded well and I felt very positive,
but like any new idea there were a few sceptics." Little did these
sceptics realize, they were only helping Popcorn Parties prosper,
because Marlene remembers thinking "I will prove you wrong." She
was determined to make her idea work.
Marlene looks back with intense pride because her idea was the beginning
of such a successful company. The home party system has a great
professional look: new packaging for seasonings, candy fruit flavourings,
burlap bags for seed and business stationery materials (Marlene
started with a handwritten receipt book). The company has grown
so much that Marlene gets quite emotional when she remembers the
very first warehouse, her kitchen. Marlene is also thankful to Darrell
for helping to prove that she was not "a crazed housewife" with
a "corny idea." She was given a chance and was trusted with the
product.
Marlene knows though, that without Colleen, Darrell, and Brent,
the support staff, the franchisees and the many representative this
idea would not have grown to where it is today. Everyone is a part
of Schneider's success. |
